Coral Reef Early Warning System for Small Island Developing States (SIDS)

June 12, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am +04
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face significant challenges from natural disasters, climate change, and limited resources, particularly the degradation of coral reefs due to rising sea temperatures. To combat this, 4EI has developed a Coral Reef Early Warning System for the Maldives, utilising remote sensing and community engagement to monitor water quality and coral cover. The system establishes a baseline assessment of coral reefs, tracks changes over time, and identifies early warning indicators of threats like coral bleaching. Outputs include monthly reports with updated reef maps and bleaching risk alerts. This system enhances climate resilience, supports marine ecosystems, boosts tourism, and protects coastlines, while fostering community involvement in conservation efforts.
